The Gold Coast sky came alive with hundreds of colourful kites on Sunday September 30 at the spectacular Jewel International Kite Festival.
Locals and holiday makers alike headed to the Surfers Paradise Jewel Beachfront to enjoy the dazzling kite show and festivities on the iconic beach.
This inaugural event attracted both professional and novice kite flyers and makers to demonstrate their skills and amazing hand-made creations. The event featured special guest stars including the internationally-acclaimed kite master Liu Zhiping who flew in from China where kites originated, along with national kite masters Robert Brasington from Tasmania and Jo Baker from Victoria, as well as the dedicated Redcliffe Kite Club.
Not only was the sky filled with colour and action, but there was plenty of things to do and enjoy on the beach, where a host of activities and workshops ran throughout the day, including make-your-own sky-high creation, master kite displays, fun tie-dye workshops and more.
Ideally located just a few minutes’ walk south along the beach from Northcliffe SLSC, between Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach, the Festival also featured food stalls and kids activities from 11am to 7pm.
As a celebration for the entire city to enjoy, the Jewel International Kite Festival was presented by the developer of Jewel, Yuhu Group Australia. The company is passionate about promoting greater understanding of cultural diversity and is demonstrating its community leadership with the announcement of their first major community project.
Chairman of AWH Investment Group and Director of Yuhu Group Mr Jimmy Huang said the Jewel International Kite Festival will create a beachside spectacle featuring international kite masters, workshops, entertainment and a sunset lantern parade for locals and visitors.
“The beach is a favourite weekend destination for so many Gold Coasters and visitors alike and the Jewel International Kite Festival will offer something for everyone to enjoy and take part in”, he said.
“We are committed to giving back to the city and becoming an important part of its culture and heritage as Jewel prepares for its grand opening in 2019 and we see this special kite festival as a wonderful day to celebrate the Gold Coast beachside way of life.”
